A brief History of the Fourth Degree.

Our Assembly, Santiago de Compostela #2305, is part of the Saint Junipero Serra Province of the Southern California District which is comprised of 54 Assemblies in the Catholic Dioceses of the Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernadino and San Diego areas.

Our Story

The Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree was established on February 22, 1900 on the principle of Patriotism; that is, the love and devotion to one’s country. Fourth Degree Knights, or Sir Knights as they are called, focus the majority of their activities on this principle. Within the Knights of Columbus, the Fourth Degree is a group of Knights who are dedicated to the service of the Church, their Country and our Order.

Formal organization came in 1910 when the Supreme Council provided a government for the degree and gave it a basic law. The Patriotic Degree was exemplified for the first time in the state of California, in the city of Los Angeles, on June 10, 1905. This was in connection with the Supreme Council’s convention in the city.

Aside from participating in patriotic and civic events, the Fourth Degree has also supported priests; in particular, those who go onto to serve as military chaplains. Through a special scholarship program, the Knights helped fund the education of seminarians preparing to become Catholic chaplains in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The Fourth Degree is most visible during church, civic, and memorial services. That’s when our Color Corps., in full uniform, stand at the ceremonial ready. Participation in the Color Corps is completely voluntary but is highly encouraged.

The Fourth Degree Assembly is also a safe place for parish Councils to gather, build bonds of Catholic fraternity, and to share information about their activities. Sir Knights of different Councils are encouraged to share information and resources between themselves to further our ultimate goal of Charity in the world.

The symbol of the Fourth Degree is the Triad of the Dove, the Cross and the Globe. The Dove, the classic symbol of the Holy Spirit and Peace is shown hovering over the orb of the earth.
